Sallie Nixon was born in Henderson, N.C. She and her husband Caldwell Nixon moved to Nebraska from North Carolina in 1967. After taking a class from poet Ted Kooser, Nixon was inspired to attend the University of Nebraska in 1969. Following her studies, Nixon returned to North Carolina. Her collections of poetry include "Surely, Goodness and Mercy" (1965), "Second Grace" (1977), "Spiraling" (1990), and "A Kind of Peace" (2006). Ted Kooser, born in Ames, Iowa in 1939, earned a BS from Iowa State University and an MA from the University of Nebraska. He is currently the Presidential Professor of English at the University of Nebraska–Lincoln. He has published 12 collections of poetry, and served as the United States Poet Laureate Consultant in Poetry to the Library of Congress from 2004-2006.
